Why You Should Make the Switch to 100% Soy Wax Candles

Calyan Wax Co. proudly uses 100% soy wax to make all of our candles. We do not use any paraffin, animal products, wax additives or dyes.

"WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?"

We're sure you've been hearing about soy wax for quite some time now. You've heard it's a natural and toxic-free alternative to other candle waxes out there.

But what's the big deal? Why is soy considered better other than waxes such as paraffin? Is soy wax safe to burn? Why should you burn soy candles as opposed to other types of candles?

We're so glad you asked! We would love to clear the air when it comes to soy wax candles. We hope you learn why we love soy and think it is the best and safest wax option for candles today.

SOY WAX IS NATURAL

Let's first talk about all the waxes that are used in candle making. Common waxes used for candle making include soy wax, paraffin wax, bees wax, coconut wax, palm wax, and apricot wax(what?). We're only going to focus on soy and paraffin wax for now. These two are the most popular waxes for candles.

Paraffin wax (the most common wax used for candle making) is a byproduct of the oil refining process and therefore is not natural. Paraffin is made by removing the waxy substance from crude oil. This is not a renewable source because this process could not happen without the oil refining industry.

Soy wax is a natural source since it comes from soybean plants. Soybean plants obviously come from the ground and therefore this is a much more renewable source for candle making ingredients. This is one of the many reasons we love using 100% soy wax in our candles.

When we say we use "100% soy wax", this means that we do not mix our wax with any other waxes. When candle companies mix soy wax with other types of wax, including paraffin wax, it is called a soy blend or a soy-based candle. Sometimes they will even just say "soy candle" even when there is paraffin mixed in. Calyan's wax is not mixed with any other waxes and therefore is 100% plant-derived and natural.

SOY IS GROWN IN AMERICA

All of the soy wax we use in our candles comes from American farms and is manufactured here in the states! We are proud to support American farmers and use a wax that comes from our own "backyard". On top of this, we make all the candles ourselves! Skip overseas manufactured candles and stick to handcrafted, US-made, soy candles.

SOY WAX CANDLES LAST LONGER

Soy wax has a lower melting temperature than paraffin wax and therefore burns longer than most other candle waxes. Many factors can affect your "candle life" such as height and width of the candle and the length of the wick. SOY HAS A GENTLE FRAGRANCE THROW

"Fragrance throw" is how we refer to the potency of the scent when the candle is burning. It can also be called "hot throw". Soy wax is loved for its gentle and present fragrance throw. Paraffin can sometimes smell artificial and overpowering in a room. Soy, on the other hand, gently fills the room with a pleasant and calming scent that doesn't seem unnatural or overpowering.
