FAQs About Human Trafficking

FAQs About Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is the exploitation of people through force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of forced labor, sexual exploitation, or other forms of involuntary servitude.

In trafficking, the key element is exploitation — someone is controlled and abused for profit or benefit, often against their will.

Traffickers often prey on vulnerabilities — such as poverty, lack of family support, immigration status, or previous abuse — to recruit and control victims. They may use violence, manipulation, debt bondage, or threats against the victim or their loved ones.

Because trafficking is a hidden crisis in our own communities in the US, and we believe business should be a force for good. Through our non-profit partnerships, we help support survivor care, legal action, and awareness efforts. Every candle you purchase brings light into dark places and helps restore freedom to those who have been exploited.

You can learn more about our why by reading our About Us page which tells Jacob’s story and passion behind helping people find freedom.

Every month, we take 5% of profit made and put those funds in a liability account. Once a year, we deploy our accrued donation amounts to select nonprofits we have built trusted relationships with.

As of November 2024, Calyan Wax Co. has donated $755,835.85 to strategic nonprofits working to give freedom and justice to brave survivors of human trafficking in the USA. This amount includes every donation that Calyan has made since starting in 2017.

If you want to learn more, we would encourage you to check out our non-profit partner’s websites. They each have great resources in explaining the problem of human trafficking and how they are combating it.
